Tech It Out: WiFi

Tech it Out is a laptop and iPad borrowing service. Check out the eDevices for 2 hours for in-library use.

The Alameda County Library offers Free wireless access "WiFi" for public use. WiFi allows appropriately equipped and configured laptop computers, tablets, & SmartPhones to access the Internet while you move about the library. Internet access is even available in areas of the library where public Internet PCs are not available.

Who can use public wireless access?
Anyone who complies with the Library's Internet Use Policy may use the library's WiFi service.

How do I connect?

     You will need:

  1. A WiFi compliant 802.11b/g/n wireless device installed in your laptop, or a laptop/tablet/smartphone with integrated WiFi capability.
  2. Microsoft Internet Explorer, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Apple Safari, Opera, or any other web browsers.

In most cases you will not need to change the settings on your computer to connect. Simply connect to Library Public Wi-Fi wireless connection, then launch your web browser. On the "Welcome to Library Wireless Internet Access" page, click the "Accept" button to redirect you to your homepage. You may begin web surfing now.

Do I need a library card?

How long does a connection last?
Your wireless connection will expire when you disconnect the wireless connection, or when you turn off your equipment. There is no maximum length of time that you may use the WiFi network.

It is recommended that you charge your equipment before visiting the library. Electrical outlets are limited and sometimes not ideally located near a table or seating. Library staff will ask you to remove electrical cords if they pose a tripping hazard.


How To Troubleshoot the WiFi Connection

Is technical support available?
Staff at the Alameda County Library are not able to offer assistance in establishing a wireless connection from your computer. They are not allowed to handle any of your equipment whatsoever. The Alameda County Library is not responsible for any changes that you make to your computer's settings and cannot guarantee that your hardware will work with our wireless connection.

You are responsible for setting up your own equipment. If you are not familiar with computers or networking, we recommend bringing someone with you who can help you configure your laptop.
