Volunteer: Home

The services of Alameda County Library are augmented by the contributions of many volunteers who give generously of their time to help in the branch libraries and in our outreach programs.

  •  Volunteers with the Fremont Main Library's Booklegger program visit K-8 classes in Fremont with intriguing stories from books to introduce children to the pleasure of reading.
  • Every month there are between 200 and 250 volunteers helping in Alameda County Library branches. Volunteers assist in a variety of support activities including preparing uncataloged paperback books for circulation, putting books in order on the shelves, checking-in and labeling new telephone directories, reshelving certain materials or working on special projects.
  • Some branches have volunteer Internet docents who help users learn to use a Web browser and explore Internet resources. If you are interested in serving as an Internet docent contact your local branch library for information.
  • Many volunteers are retired or working adults. Student volunteers must be enrolled in high school. Most projects require a minimum commitment of 2 to 4 hours per week for six months. Shorter projects are designed for student community service hours

To volunteer at any of the Alameda County Library locations please contact a branch library directly.  Teen volunteers may look online to see available opportunities at a library near them.
